Adult Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services

Detox Unit

On our 12-bed unit on Midway Road, adults experiencing acute symptoms from substance abuse can receive medication to prevent and manage withdrawal symptoms and also receive medical and psychosocial treatment to help them become and stay substance-free.

Independence Recovery Program (IR)

After Detox, individuals can take part in a 6-bed, 28-day treatment program to help them remain clean and sober. The program follows the 12 Step Model to recovery and resilience. Individuals are welcome to refer themselves to this program, and participants are also accepted from community providers, Mental Health Court, or jail.

Case Management

Adults with a mental illness and perhaps a co-occurring substance abuse disorder need a wide range of services, especially if they lack a natural support system to assist them in their recovery. Through Targeted Case Management, our staff can  help them with finding and maintaining supportive house, establishing linkages  with community agencies and services, providing education to families and significant others about mental illness and coping strategies, getting primary medical care at the New Horizons Primary Care Clinic, and overall reducing the need for future psychiatric hospitalization.Intensive Case Management is available for individuals requiring more frequent interventions and a higher level of support to maintain their stability. A team provides services in the home or community setting, with a staff member available 24/7 to assist as needed.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)

The Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) program at New Horizons was established in 2017 to address the opioid epidemic impacting individuals, families, and even entire communities across Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River, and Okeechobee counties. The program is an intensive outpatient service that moves the recovery model from an “abstinence-only” approach to a “harm reduction” approach. Clients receive compassionate counseling, medical assessment, and medications (Vivitrol, Suboxone, Subutex) that prevent withdrawal symptoms while providing an opportunity to improve quality of life. Peers – people who have lived or experienced substance use disorders – are an essential component of the MAT program, offering clients a unique understanding, empathy, and proof that recovery is possible. The MAT clinic, located at 4500 W. Midway Road in Fort Pierce, also distributes Narcan to the community at no cost. Narcan can be an antidote for an opioid overdose. Having Narcan on hand is recommended if you have an opioid addiction or know an opioid addict; it could save a life.

Psychosocial Rehab and Independent Living Skills

At each of our centers in St. Lucie, Indian River, Martin and Okeechobee, we offer recovery-oriented services to assist individuals on their road to recovery. They learn skills needed for independent living, such as medication management, pre-employment, health maintenance, social skills and use of community resources.

Children’s Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services

Frances Langford Children’s Crisis Center

Funded initially through the generosity of the Frances Langford Foundation, this 20-bed facility provides services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for children from ages 6 through 17 who have mental health and/or substance abuse issues and need crisis intervention.

Outpatient Therapy Services

Outpatient Therapy Services provide mental health, and substance abuse services for adults and children in our four county areas. Clients may be referred by family, a community agency, the courts, or may be self-referred. Comprehensive social, psychological and psychiatric evaluations are provided. Based upon the evaluation and diagnosis, the appropriate treatment will be provided for adults, children and families.

Case Management

Case managers serve as coordinators for children and their families who are in need of services from many community agencies. A New Horizons team links families to community resources and advocates for the family when needed. They provide services in the home, school and community.

Family Intervention

When the Department of Children and Families decides that parents may be having a possible substance abuse problem that is contributing to the abuse or neglect of their children, the family may be referred to our Family Intervention Team. We provide assessments, evaluations, referrals to community resources,  and help to remove any barriers to treatment.

Strengthening Families

Strengthening Families is a family skills training program that serves families in St. Lucie County with children ages 5 to 14. Families attend classes over a 14-week period to learn better parenting and family life skills.

Home Services

When children are experiencing severe emotional problems, the Therapeutic Behavioral On-Site Services Team goes to the child’s home and school to assist parents, teachers and school officials. The team offers problem solving skills, anger management skills and other treatments to maximize the child’s strengths and reduce behavior problems in school and at home.

Student Assistance Program (SAP)

The Student Assistance Program is a substance abuse prevention conducted in the elementary and middle schools in St. Lucie County to educate youth on the dangers of substance abuse. The educators help students develop greater self- esteem and coping skills individually or in small group sessions. This program is evidence-based. Across the country, this program has proven to be effective. It is funded in part through the Children’s Services Council of St. Lucie and the Department of Children and Families.

Special Programs

Transitional Group Home (TGH)

The Transitional Group Home on our Midway campus is in every way a home for individuals with severe and persistent mental illness who have major skill deficits in activities of daily living and independent living. In this 16-bed supervised setting, they learn to take responsibility for their recovery, practice coping and life skills, gradually gain independence, and eventually transition back to the community.

Zero Suicide

New Horizons is committed to the belief that even one suicide is one too many. Its Zero Suicide Program trains New Horizons staff and also members of the community in proven steps to recognize the signs that a person may be contemplating suicide and to direct the right resources to help that person. New Horizons is the only mental health facility in the State of Florida to receive a grant from the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration to implement this program.
